From March 24 – 26, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to the site of the band’s first show, NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl, for a three-night stand at the Williamsburg venue. Today, the band’s Rad Tracks series of releases continues with the unveiling of professionally-shot footage of JRAD’s “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” from the first night of the run.
Audio of the track can be downloaded here. “Mississippi Half-Step” closed out the second set of JRAD’s March 24th performance at Brooklyn Bowl, the only night of the run that didn’t feature any guests.
Yesterday, it was revealed a fundraising campaign for the Frank Zappa documentary Who The F*@% Is Frank Zappa was so successful the film has become the most-funded documentary on Kickstarter. The campaign is still underway and today director Alex Winter and the film’s producers have shared amazing footage of Frank Zappa from the guitarist’s vault.
In the clip below, which was premiered by Rolling Stone, we see Frank arrive at the San Francisco Airport in 1980. He is greeted by the U.S. Navy Band who play an incredible rendition of FZ’s “Joe’s Garage.” Zappa was clearly impressed and even gets in on the act by conducting the band.
Longtime David Bowie drummer Dennis Davis has passed away. Davis was behind the kit for such Bowie hits as “Fame,” “Golden Years” and “Heroes,” among others. The news of his death was confirmed by producer and fellow Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti.
In addition to his work with Bowie, the Manhattan native worked extensively with renowned vibraphonist Roy Ayers, alongside guitarist and future Bowie cohort Carlos Alomar. He was taught early on by legendary drummers Max Roach and Elvin Jones and served in the Vietnam War.
On April 24, the Grammy Museum LA in Los Angeles will host Celebrating Jefferson Airplane: A Conversation With Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen & Jack Casady. The three members of the most acclaimed Jefferson Airplane lineup will discuss their esteemed career at the Clive Davis Theater, hosted by Scott Goldman.
Tickets for the event, which will start at 12 p.m. local on the 24th, will go on sale Thursday, April 14 at 12 p.m. PT via AXS.com. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen was a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, one of the most important bands to ever come out of San Francisco.
Soul-rockers The Nth Power recently released their debut studio album Abundance and today have unveiled the official video for one of their signature tunes – “Only Love.” The band teamed with production company Dreambear to create an animated video for the track.
Guitarist Nick Cassarino, percussionist Weedie Braimah, drummer Nikki Glaspie and bassist Nate Edgar are all re-created in animated form for the “Only Love” video. Current Nth Power keyboardist Courtney “Jay-Mel” Smith joined the band after the recording of Abundance and doesn’t appear in the video.
